I've chartered from HYC both in San Diego and Long Beach. Both experiences were just what I was looking for. The boats are well-maintained, and if I had questions, the staff was more than happy to assist. But their attitude is definitely, "You know what you're doing - here's the boat, so have a great time!" I had all the time I needed to get used to the boat, and I made a short list of questions each time, which were answered with accuracy and completeness. Their prices are low - even on the insurance, which I've paid for all four times I rented (San Diego bay gets crowded on weekends especially, and the insurance buys piece of mind when it's clear some sailors have thrown the rules of the road overboard). If you've got your own chartering checklist, and enjoy going through it on your own and at your own pace, this is the right service.

If you are looking for a charter company that will throw you the keys to your yacht, not look you in the eye and never notice you were there, this is your place! I am trying to be diplomatic and realize these people are actually in business so there must be some people out there who prefer not to interact at all with the company staff except to provide your credit card information. The charter company 1/2 mile down the road is Harbor Sailboats (I do not work for them, in fact I am a member of both sailing clubs) is *much* better, has boats in better condition and abundant contact with sailing experts (and they will leave you alone if you ask!).
2 years earlier I chartered with HYC and took a Catalina 42 from San Diego to Ensenada. The first boat I inspected I had to refuse due to *deplorable* condition. The next boat was still in *bad* shape but was all they had left. The only thing that kept the boat and my crew off the rocks in Mexico was my 10+ years of sea experience and my Leatherman tool !!
The good news - this company has all new yachts in 2008 - go figure :~)- Overall
