Great placer and people. This is not for people who want to spend each evening at the beach bar. Most anchorages are secluded and there are not many places to provision. The seclusion and lack of development is what makes this stand out.

Actually, 2009. We sailed out of San Pedro, spent a week sailing to Placencia and then another week sailing back to San Pedro. We swapped crews and reprovisioned in Placencia. Other than problems with the boat (see my post under TMM)
our experience was wonderful. I had my family, kids and grandkids, the first week and friends the second with some kids each week. The sailing was glorious tradewind sailing at its best mostly reaches under full sail making 8 knots or better with well used stretched out sails. The shallow waters and coral heads make for tricky navigation especially when approching one of the many cayes. The kids got to swim near manatees, the reef diving/snorleling was great, the dive boats would pickup and drop off our dive party at the anchorage. There is little in the way of getting fresh water, ice or provisioning away from the mainland and even there it wasn't easy. I have to mention Thatch Caye Resort, they bent over backwards to help us out, with a days notice they sold us a very large cooler of ice, delivered fresh water to the boat and took our order for beer and beverages to the mainland on one of their daily runs. They also had free moorings to tie up to. We are already planning our next trip except we will be using the Moorings out of Placencia because of their closer proximity to the better cayes and sailing grounds. BTW, for provisioning in Placencia, Sunday morning about 8 am a large truck with the freshest fruits, vegies and frozen meats pulls into town and sells out of the back of the truck. Ask where at Wendy's restaurant.- Overall Rating
