This was our first trip to Belize, after two previous TMM charters in the Grenadines. Everything went just as expected. The staff were extremely courteous and efficient. The boat was beautiful. Sailing in Belize is special. We are experienced sailors, but this was our first trip in a Cat. We could have used a little more instruction on anchoring, given the extra windage of these Cats.

There have been many changes at TMM Belize since June of last year. The young blond man? Gone. The dumb owner? Gone. The lower level staff? Now running the base and taking great pride in running things the way they should be run. If you liked Belize but hated TMM Belize think about giving us another shot...

This charter actually took place in 2009. When asked to dive the boat prior to charter, I found an 8" crack running back from the leading edge and another one running forward from the trailing edge of the starboard keel where it atteches to the hull. There was also an impact scrape on the keel running from the leading edge aft on the outboard surface about half way up from the bottom. The boat was equipt with a genset, A/C, TV and DVD player. The A/C didn't work in the starboard hull, and the TV/DVD weren't plugged in and the only obvious plugin had tape over it. The wind instruments were also inop and the mast head indicator was too small to see from the helm. The guages for the water tanks were inop and there was no way to visually check the tanks. Additionally, the refrig and freezer operated off the genset and when the genset went inop in Placencia we found out that at that time TMM had no dedicated mechanic on the staff since they closed the Placencia. They intended to have one of their captains look at the problem when he flew down from San Pedro to check in a returning charter boat the next day. With a refrig/freezer full of food in the tropics I said that was unacceptable. They finally called their former mechanic in Placencia and he came out to the boat after getting off from is new job. He quit when they closed the base, not wanting to live and work in San Pedro. He diagnosed and corrected the problem in about an hour. The real disappointment was the lack of concern shown by upper management. The lower level staff were very concerned about the mechanical state of the boat but were unable to do anything about it. When I was later asked by email to fill out a customer satisfaction form, I gave a very detailed list of discrepencies outlining my concerns and never recieved a reply. Another indication of upper managements lack of concern. I have been a professional helicopter for over four decades and have seen it over and over, when a company begins to let preventive maintence slip its on its way out.
